VVS1 Diamond Clarity: What to Check Before Buying

VVS1 describes diamond clarity, one of the details to compare when choosing a lab grown diamond ring. It does not describe the diamond's origin, color or carat weight.

What does VVS1 mean?

VVS1 means Very, Very Slightly Included 1. Minute internal characteristics are extremely difficult for a trained grader to see at 10× magnification. VVS2 is the next clarity grade within the VVS category. VVS1 is not the same as Flawless.

Will VVS1 look brighter?

Clarity alone does not guarantee sparkle. Look at cut and proportions, the diamond's appearance in different lighting, and its color and dimensions. A higher clarity grade may not produce an obvious difference to the unaided eye compared with another carefully chosen diamond.

Read the individual diamond details

  1. Confirm that the product specifies a lab grown diamond.
  2. Check whether carat weight refers to the center stone or total diamond weight.
  3. Review clarity, color and dimensions for the selected stone.
  4. If a grading report is included, ask for the report number and verify it with the issuing laboratory.
  5. Distinguish the center diamond's report from any accent diamonds. A center-stone report does not automatically grade every small diamond in the ring.
